01 / About

Building robots that are useful, intuitive, and safe.

Hi, I'm Prachit Gupta, a Master's student in Mechanical Science and Engineering at UIUC and a graduate researcher at the N-ACXIS Lab in Aerospace Engineering.

My research focuses on making autonomous systems safe, trustworthy, and capable of behaving in ways that mimic human-like decision making. As autonomous systems become increasingly common around us, I believe it is paramount that they remain provably safe and trustworthy for the people who interact with them, even if they have no understanding of how the underlying technology works. More recently, I have been exploring how foundation models such as Large Language Models (LLMs) can help realise that broader goal.

I primarily work with aerial drones and am expanding these ideas to a variety of robotic platforms, including flapping-wing drones, spider-inspired robots, hexarotors, and ground vehicles. My research is inherently interdisciplinary, bringing together ideas from mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, controls, robotics, machine learning, and computer science.

Statistical Contraction for LLM-Based UAV Planners

Derived probabilistic safety bounds with conformal prediction for a fine-tuned LLaMA-8B UAV planner, certifying incremental exponential stability to an optimal trajectory via contraction theory. Integrated the planner with closed-loop control for intuitive language communication and semantic scene awareness, then demonstrated natural-language task execution on Starling 2 in cluttered indoor environments using probabilistic tubes with a 0.24 m safety radius calibrated at 90% coverage over 2,000 samples.

Diffusion-Guided Learning of Graph Barrier Functions for Safe Distributed Multi-Robot Control

Devised Graph Barrier Diffusion (GBDiff), a framework that combines model-based diffusion with graph barrier certificates to reason about finite-horizon, actuator-constrained multi-robot interactions. Safe diffusion-generated controls are distilled into a multi-head GNN policy that is jointly learned with safety certificates. The approach achieved an empirical 99% safety rate across varying agent counts, topologies, and dynamics, and was deployed through Crazyswarm on eight Crazyflie UAVs for symmetric position swaps in settings where traditional QP-based controllers encountered deadlock.

Perception-Aware Planning and Control for the Polaris GEM e2

Built a perception–planning–control stack with ERFNet lane segmentation, bird's-eye-view geometry, ZED2/YOLOv8 perception, and stop/resume behaviors. Formulated a moving-lookahead Frenet MPC with obstacle constraints and deployed lane perception, Pure Pursuit/PI, and PACMod drive-by-wire on the GEM e2.

Teaching RL Agents Human-Like Driving with LLMs

Used large language models to optimize reward functions for Deep Q-Network agents through human-centric feedback. The resulting action surrogate achieved 93.7% held-out accuracy and 96.2% F1, producing human-like speed selection, safe merging, and restrained lane changes.
